Question: What is a Podiatric surgeon? and What can a Podiatric surgeon do?

Answer: Podiatric surgery is defined as a specialty within Podiatric Medicine that includes the diagnosis, medical and surgical management of all diseases, deformities, injuries and defects of the foot, ankle and related structures of the leg and surgical adjunctive treatment thereto as governed by appropriate State Status.

Question: How is a Podiatric Surgeon trained?

Answer: The 7 colleges of podiatric medicine offer a four-year graduate program leading to the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree. After receiving undergraduate degrees, candidates must complete the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). The 4 year course of instuction is broken into 2 years of classroom and laboratory instruction and 2 years of clinical work followed by special training in foot, ankle and leg pathology. Hospital based medical and surgical residency follows.
